About Annie

Annie’s Foundation was created in the memory of Ann Lohry-Smith, a mom from Ankeny, lowa who inspired other parents and community members with her fierce defense of public education.

Loving mother to three wonderful children, Ann was a very involved parent and was active within her children’s schools.

Ann became interested in the school board and its politics during the covid pandemic and was a regular guest and public speaker at the school board meetings. Her fiery personality and sharp wit ensured that everyone took notice when she was speaking at the podium.

When the Johnston Community School District found itself at the center of a controversial book banning discussion, Ann did everything she could to educate herself and others on the issue at hand and advocated for the books to remain in schools. It is in the spirit of this advocacy that we honor Ann’s memory with Annie’s Foundation.

Carry on Ann’s legacy by supporting Annie’s Foundation and join us in advocating for educational freedom and the right to access diverse literature.
